We are thrilled to announce that Aotearoa New Zealand’s game development sector has officially surpassed in annual revenue! We calculated this milestone by combining aggregate GDSR applicant revenue (supplied by NZ On Air), $1 billion with revenue from the wider industry (beyond GDSR participants).

Our Annual Industry Survey is Launching Soon While we celebrate this milestone, the job isn’t done. Our annual industry survey is launching soon, and we urgently need your participation. While the $1B figure is very real, it isn’t the full picture - this survey is the only way to generate a definitive, sector-wide revenue total. Your data is the hard evidence we use to successfully advocate for you across all levels of government and protect critical initiatives like the GDSR. We need every studio’s input to keep fighting for you.
Advocacy Update: Positive Progress with Inland Revenue
After writing to the Ministers of Finance, Revenue, and Technology, Science & Innovation, we secured a second meeting with IR to pitch excluding game development from proposed tax changes affecting how and when development costs are claimed. The meeting was hugely successful. We felt genuinely heard - IRD asked great questions and clearly understood the issues. We actively discussed workarounds to the cashflow problems these tax changes would create, which the GDSR was specifically designed to fix. We will update you as soon as we hear more.
NZGDC... but not as you know it!
We are shaking things up for NZGDC this year! The format is different, with new social events and fresh additions to the conference programme designed to make it our best event yet. Stay tuned over the coming month for more insights on what’s going down at NZGDC, as tickets will be going on sale soon.

Lastly, don’t miss the “Running the Game” event hosted by MinterEllisonRuddWatts on the 11th of June in Wellington. Whether you have burning questions about banking, insurance, tax, legal, or HR, experts will be in the room to support your journey.
